DJ Shadow’s first album in five years, The Mountain Will Fall, won't be out until June 24---but that hasn't stopped the hype machine from gearing up. The producer has already previewed the title track on Soundcloud, as well as releasing the Run the Jewels collaboration "Nobody Speak" as a Record Store Day exclusive package (and one included a RTJ-branded Google Cardboard).
Today, we’ve got the premiere of the new music video for “The Mountain Will Fall,” created by Territory Studios. It pairs the expansive, dreamlike instrumental track with a astronaut floating among wavy-patterned mountains on an alien planet somewhere, then launching through space until a grand design reveals itself. The creative studio has worked on graphics for The Martian, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Guardians of the Galaxy—mostly creating the images that appear on screens within different scenes and VFX assets. But this video, which Territory art director Martí Romances says a small team produced in only a week, is a natural thematic extension of those films: at once awe-inspiring and dangerous. It’s the perfect visual introduction for a new DJ Shadow album, since the producer has already said he was looking to push personal boundaries in creating new music. Next month, we’ll all get a chance to hear what it sounds like to reach for that horizon---five albums into his storied career.
