Granting the wishes of nerds everywhere, Disney announced today that it will be building two massive Star Wars-themed attractions at its Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks. Want to fly in a Millennium Falcon? That'll be there. Want to follow that up with drinks at a Mos Eisley-esque cantina? You'll be able to do that too.
The attractions, or "lands" as they call them, will be 14 acres each and, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, will be staffed and occupied by "local inhabitants" of various Star Wars worlds. (Please by Threepio, please be Threepio, please be Threepio...) The massive new spaces, Iger added during his remarks at the D23 Expo, represent the "largest, single-themed land expansion ever" in Disney's history.
"These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance," Iger said.
What Iger did not say, however, is when Disney planned to actually open these new attractions. Considering how massive the construction of something like this must be, it's possible we could be prepping for the release of Episode XII by the time they open. Then again, this is Disney, it's quite possible they can actually move heaven and Earth. So we'll see.
What is for sure is that no matter how long it takes, these expansions could easily become the coolest thing in the neighborhood of the Magic Kingdom. Iger showed off just a few pieces of concept art for the D23 crowd (above) and what Disney is planning looks nothing short of building an entire Star Wars village in the middle of a theme park. And walking around in something like that is pretty much every Star Wars fan's dream life.
Now all they have to do is wait for that dream life to begin.
