The Last Unicorn was released in theaters 30 years ago this week. The fantasy tale, based on the book of the same name by Peter S. Beagle, was brought to life as a cartoon by Rankin/Bass Productions. Even though it was only released on 648 screens, The Last Unicorn ranked sixth on its opening weekend.
It's popularity has only grown over the years.
When I was a child, The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite movies. The story was a little dark but it was so magical. I wanted to help Amalthea on her journey to find the other unicorns. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized this beloved movie was based on a book.
I was lucky enough to have dinner with Peter S. Beagle several years ago at Dragon*Con. He talked about his career over the years and how he wished he could do more with The Last Unicorn. But at the time he was in a legal battle over the rights, which he has since won. Because he has the rights back he has been able to make some of these ideas into reality, like The Last Unicorn line of perfume from The Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. In his newsletter, The Raven, Peter S. Beagle promised that there was more to come for The Last Unicorn in honor of the 30th anniversary.
Happy Anniversary to The Last Unicorn! You can read more about this story at The Examiner.
