Thieves at Heart (The Valley of Ten Crescents) by Tristan Tarwater is a gritty fantasy story surrounding the coming of age of a young, elven thief.
We first meet Tavera, or Tavi, as she is living in a whorehouse, picking the pockets of men who are otherwise engaged. She is taken away from that place by a thief by name of Derk, who informs her that she is basically now his apprentice and like a daughter.
The story is really a coming of age tale as Tavi grows up in a harsh world learning the ins and outs of becoming the best thief that she can. Derk is not always the best father figure, but he does try his best to raise Tavi right.
The characters in this story are very engaging and realistic. The fantasy world is painted very vividly helping bring another level to the story. I found this story to be a very fast read, and I really wanted to read more about these characters.
