I found these spectacular Star Wars cookie cutters at Williams-Sonoma last Spring, but had yet to try them. The occasion finally presented itself one evening when the baby went to sleep early and the eldest was out of school for the long Labor Day weekend. She had been looking forward to making them all Summer.
We mixed up a batch of our favorite sugar cookie dough. While I was mixing, my helper cut waxed paper to fit the table and then meticulously taped it down to ease clean up. GeekDad says he sees a future engineer here.
Then we sprinkled flour on our surface and rolled out the cookie dough. We learned the thicker the dough, the better the details come out after baking. My little assistant found it fascinating that when she dumped the flour out it held its shape. Aren't kids fun?
We quickly discovered you must sprinkle the inside of the cookie cutter with flour every few cookies or the dough begins to stick in the nooks and crannies of the cutter. Also, it is important to push the plunger in just deep enough. If you don't go deep enough, the details are lost when the cookies expand in the oven. Once your cookies are done and cooled and if you are feeling really crafty, you can whip up a batch of royal icing and go to town like the folks at Williams Sonoma did.
The pictured decorating looks like it was done by a professional who got paid by the hour. Our royal icing adventures never look this good.
Throughout the cookie making extravaganza there was much discussion about the characters and the movies. So it's a great conversation starter to educate your little geekling about Star Wars.
This was a tasty way to spend a quality geeky evening with my kid. You can still get these cookie cutters at Williams Sonoma and they have pancake molds and an apron as well. I also got the apron for my four month old son figuring I wouldn't come across an apron with Star Wars characters on it again any time soon. Yummy these cookies are!
