DJ Shadow's "What Does Your Soul Look Like?" married instrumental hip-hop, psychedelia, cult classics like Altered States and Twin Peaks and much more. The four-part, sample-based epic provided watershed moments on Shadow's 1996 debut, Endtroducing, and the ephemeral 1998 follow-up, Preemptive Strike.
Now he's using it to sell Reeboks.
Who can blame him? After an initial series of Shadow-specific Reeboks sold out, the shoe titan asked for one more batch, pictured above, emblazoned with graphics from "What Does Your Soul Look Like?" and retailing for just over $100 from the turntablist's official site.
The final batch's title? "What Does Your Sole Look Like?" Cue the laugh track.
Shadow, known to the IRS as San Francisco musical virtuoso Josh Davis, has been hawking merch and music, lately culled from his dense vault of remixes and singles, like crazy since his uneven 2006 full-length, The Outsider, brought his brilliant streak to a sudden stop. We're anxiously awaiting his next effort, hoping it's a return to the glory of Endtroducing, Preemptive Strike and 2002's criminally underrated Private Press. Until it drops, we'll always have the shoes to show off our love.
